Dragon's Lair meets Anime! It's basically a Full Motion Video game in
which you control the fate of Ashe the knight on his quest to find the
three pieces of the Triad Stone. Evil King Baroll has enslaved the
tribes of the once peaceful island of Yllin and the only hope is to
defeat him with the power of the re-unified Triad Stone. Young Ashe has
to find the three pieces of the stone defeat the King's guardians and
fight his way to King Baroll's castle for the final battle.
Triad Stone is fairly complex: actions are the four directions (up,
down, left, right), gathering strength (repeated pressing of the
strength button) and directional sword fighting (sword button combined
with a direction). The action is almost non-stop and the gameplay is
very fluent. After completion of one stage you come to a selection
screen where you can pick the next quest. The first three levels are of
medium difficulty but then the game gets extremely challenging (or maybe
my reflexes just suck).
Graphics are excellent, very smooth and switching between the scenes
is instantaneous. The video sequences are arranged in an interleaved
format on the disc with key sequences (death, stage complete etc.)
occurring multiple times. This helps to speed up scene switching but
prevents the video from being watched on a regular laserdisc player -
all you'll see is two scenes flickering back and forth. Sound is good
and adds to the game.
Overall one of the best games for the LaserActive system! |
