6th Annual Atari Championship

Sunday was the culmination of the Obsolete Media / Classic Gaming Weekend: the 6th Annual Atari Championship! After a one year hiatus nobody was sure how many gamers would show up but our fears were unfounded. Almost 30 contestants signed up and brought some additional support personnel! Beth, Zack and Jake, with the help of Jamie and Peter from The Little Theater and us NWCGE guys pulled off an awesome show!

Contestants warmed up on 6 TVs and a giant projection screen and got ready for the contest. Kaboom turned out to be a favorite with many, probably because the preliminary round was a points contest on Kaboom. Lee's warm-up score was 10873 for starters! The semi-finalists went through an elimination round in Warlords and then another elimination round of Combat narrowed the field down to four. A points match with Bowling and Circus Atari brought it down to three and then two who then competed in the final of NWCGE Invaders (Coke Wins clone) for the grand prize!

Early on it was quite obvious that the female competition was very strong! In fact Cara (runner-up) was kicking butt in all of the games only to fall apart in the final (Space Invaders was not her thing). Her boyfriend Dave ended up in 1st place, Cara 2nd, Lee P.(who has always made a strong showing in these championships!) ended up 3rd and Jason 4th. Truly worthy contestants!
