Classic Gaming Expo 2K2
Part V

Swap And Trading Session

After the show closed Saturday evening @ 5:00 PM it was time for the traditional buy/sell/trade session in the keynotes room. The room was packed with collectors carrying suitcases and boxes full of goods ranging from pretty common to extremely rare. I would venture a guess that I saw about 60 prototypes up for trade, as well as Swordquest Waterworld, multiple Quadruns, Crazy Climber etc. - lots of good and hard to find stuff. I noticed an increase in 8 & 16 Bit Nintendo and SEGA stuff as well as more non-Atari systems, the spectrum of collectable classic videogames is definitely getting broader and younger!

Lots of collectors during the trading session! Collectors... Bags, boxes, suitcases... "How about one of these for one of those?"

Raina Lee and her 1-UP (classic) videogame fan-zine! Nice rare stuff! Is that a Quadrun and a Waterworld? Intellivision stuff!

The owner of this pile of Coleco ADAM stuff was so nice and gave me a free box of tapes, thanks! I took a couple and handed it on free to the next guy! SEGA and Nintendo stuff

A few quick words about Raina Lee's 1-Up magazine: originally I just bought the magazine for its nice underground-rave-type cover styling but once I read it, I was positively surprised! This magazine is pretty cool! The first issue had a nice review of videogame related movies, including the famous 'Joysticks', 'TRON' (my favorite movie of all time!), 'D.A.R.Y.L.' and of course 'The Last Starfighter' among others. The second issue had among other great stuff a very nice interview with Walter Day of TwinGalaxies. If you are interested in a very different, sometimes feminist, always unique and overall good to read classic videogame fan-zine you should check out the 1-UP website and buy some copies.

Going once, going twice, gone!

Also a tradition by now: the CGE Saturday night auction. So you heard about all the cool and rare stuff, you couldn't trade for it, Ebay was too expensive, what now? As always the CGE is the right spot when it comes to classic videogame stuff! This year's auction had a nice amount of hard-to-find items and unique one of a kinds. Granted, there were some common items but everything could be bought at very reasonable prices! And when some items didn't go very far John offered a cold Corona to keep the bids coming - that seemed to work pretty well!

Protection against UV: Joe sports the cool Vectrex 3-D googles. Notice the cold Corona on the right, it was later used as bidder-bait! Original drawing for the Donkey Kong Jr. cereal box Commodore C64 tape collection Joe holding a cool N64 sign, from what I heard this one was bought for Chris Romero's son (dads who collect videogames are the greatest!)!

Awesome Springer prototype in red casing! Coleco Zaxxon table-top. Chris checking out a stack of old magazines Crazy Climber table-top

Barry Friedman signed this issue on the spot - cool shirt too! The men behind Bounty Bob... Bill Kunkel signed a stack of Arcade Express newsletters that I won!

Overall the price level was very reasonable! The big hits were Venture II from Tim Snider (although not quite as expensive as last year!), a Nintendo Super NES retail demo/display unit which went for $300, a really nice (especially in the dark!) lighted and mirrored Nintendo N64 retail sign which fetched $160, VeCaves/Spike's Spree game for the Vectrex with went for $140 after selling for $30 just a few hours earlier and a stack of 34 issues of Electronic Games magazine which went for $260 (less than $8 per issue!).
